Enrico Toti Submarine Last Trip

LAST JOURNEY OF THE SUBMARINE "ENRICO TOTI"

Milan, night of 14-15 August, 2005:

The submarine Enrico Toti, number 506, covers the last miles to reach its ultimate destination: the Museum of Science and Technology “Leonardo da Vinci” in Milan.

On November 1st, 2000, its thirty years of active service (performed mainly in the Mediterranean Sea) came to an end. Nothwithstanding its definition as a “war ship”, it never took part in a real war. Besides that, in my opinion, the main aspect is the technological side. The charming side is the opportunity of sailing and studying in the deep of the sea (do you remember Jules Verne?)

This VR panorama shows the moment of moving from Viale Molise towards Via Monte Ortigara. Here, as in other places, Toti had to stop for awhile, waiting for the soldiers of “Genio” to move the heavy plates on which it had passed, and then replace them for the following steps. This technique was devised in order to better distribute the 500 tons weight of the submarine itself, in addition to the weight of the truck used for transportation.

The total length of the convoy was 60 meters, while the length of the submarine was 46 meters.

SOTTOMARINO ENRICO TOTI: L'ULTIMO VIAGGIO

Milano, notte tra il 14 ed il 15 agosto 2005. Il sottomarino Enrico Toti, numero 506, percorre gli ultimi chilometri che lo separano dalla sua destinazione definitiva: il Museo della Scienza e Tecnologia “Leonardo da Vinci” in Milano (o e’ una ripetizione?). Il primo novembre 2000, il sottomarino conclude la sua trentennale attivita’ svolta prevalentemente nelle acque del mediterraneo. Pur essendo una “nave da gierra”, non ha partecipato a guerre, e poi a me interessa sottolineare l’aspetto tecnologico. Pensare che si possa navigare e studiare in profondita’ e per lungo tempo, mi ha sempre affascinato (ricordate Verne?). La panoramica che vedete e’ stata scattata nel momento in cui il Toti sta per lasciare viale Molise ed entrare in via Monte Ortigara: qui, come in altri casi, e’ restato fermo per diversi minuti, in attesa che i militari del Genio spostassero le pesanti lamiere sulle quali era appena passato e che le riposizionassero dove sarebbe passato subito dopo. Questa tecnica per distribuire meglio il carico di oltre 500 tonnellate oltre al peso del “camion” (non so come dire meglio, tu?). La lunghezza totale del convoglio era di 60 metri, quella del sottomarino 46. Partito da via Toffetti alle 22,00 del 14 e’ arrivato al Museo verso le 6,15 del 15 Agosto.
