The Manda Coal Mine of Kumamoto Prefecture Arao City is maximum level coal mine facilities that are made from 1897 to 1908, and played a major role to the modernization of Japan. Motive power that is steam at first takes the place of the electric power in the age, and the amount of the coal mining has increased. 25,738,466 tons were mined at 38 years from 1913 through 1945. However, the coal mining efficiency decreased, the coal mining was discontinued in 1951, and a part of facilities was dismantled. Afterwards, facilities have been maintained until March, 1997 because of pumping and the pit management. It is specified for the important cultural asset in a Japanese country for facilities where an excellent at that time, a coal mine technology is told in 1998, and remaining facilities are preserved now.
