At the Beginnings of deep sea navigation one's was dependent on handmade maps, sextants and signals from coast. Till this day lighthouses serves us, but they have lost their importance, because of high technology navigation. Due to exact geographical material and gps autopilots the former essential lighthouses become historical prop.
Same happened to lighthouse Wittenbergen/Rissen at Elbe River near Hamburg.
Since 1900 it has been serving. Since 2004 it is official listed as a historical building.
