To nineteenth-century Americans "culture" meant European culture. The recognition of important and uniquely American modern culture was slow to appear.

This building, one of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, is a careful reproduction of the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris, and holds a primarily European collection of fine arts.

The museum, known simply as the Legion of Honor was created by Mrs Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, an interesting woman who rose from being a penniless artist's model (known as Big Alma) to fame and fortune. She became a socialite and philanthropist after marrying the heir to the Spreckels Sugar empire. The Legion of Honor Museum features ten works by Auguste Rodin, most of them purchased in person by Alma from the sculptor himself in Paris.

The other Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the De Young, concentrates on American art and the art and anthropology of Latin America. Two other notable museums are the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
