The original Bay Bridge was completed in 1936. In 1989 during the Loma Prieta earthquake a section of the east span collapsed. Soon thereafter plans began for a retrofit of the western span and a replacement of the eastern span. 24 years and $6.5 billion later, the new bridge has finally opened. The old bridge will be dismantled and gone by 2016. It was in use for 77 years. The new one is expected to last for 150 years and be able to withstand the largest earthquake expected within the next 1500 years. Only time will tell.
