The Marienberg abbey (Abbazia Monte Maria) is situated above the Village of Burgeis in Vinschgau, South Tyrol. Its origins date back to the early 12th century. The impressive white building can be seen from far and still today it is an active monastery, 14 Benedictine monks living here.
The original Romanesque church was remodeled in the baroque style in the middle of the 17th century. The organ was constructed 1865-67 and fully restored in 2000-01.
The main jewel of the abbey and cultural highlight are the Romanesque frescos in the crypt, in very well preserved strong colors. Visits to the crypt are strictly regulated and no photographs are allowed.
