This is the wooden chapel of the small fishermen's village Skeppsmalen at the coast of the Gulf of Botnia outside the town Ornskoldsvik. It was build in the 1800th century. For a panorama tour of Skeppsmalen visit Fotoverkstan. Skeppsmalen (the local spelling is "Skeppsmaln") has a museum specialised in the fishing and preparation of the baltic herring. In the old times fish used to be conserved in salt, but salt was expensive and thus reduced to a minimum. This opened for a special fermentation process which transfered the herring into a delicious meal, surstromming. The village, with the lighthouse "Skagsudde", is the base for pilots helping ships to navigate in and out of the archipelago. This time of the year there is usually snow, but a few mild days with rain spoiled it. Since it is the time of the vinter solstice and the location is not very far from the arctic circle the sun rises just above the horizon at noon, and the day is very short.
