The Jungfrau Railway The pioneer of all mountain railways, it began operating an all-year-round service from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch in 1912 . The mountain terminus is the Jungfraujoch, altitude 3454 metres, where two underground station halls house Europe's highest altitude railway station. The most important stretch is the 7km long tunnel through the rock of the Eiger and Mönch. Two intermediate stations, Eigerwand and Eismeer are situated in caverns blasted from solid rock. Both have panorama windows giving absolutely breathtaking views deep into the Alpine world. Sphinx Observation Terrace Picture of the Sphinx The new observation building on the Sphinx rock was inaugurated in summer 1996. The Sphinx building and observation terrace stand 117 metres above the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe and provide stunning 360° views. The facility is reached by a spacious double lift. The trip to the "Top of Europe“ is spectacular yet safe. Over half a million guests visit the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe every year. The Jungfraujoch is not only a spectacular vantage point but also an excellent location for a wide range of scientific research projects, with the pure air and easy railway access providing ideal perquisites. Astronomers, geologists, physicists, meteorologists and hydrologists make valuable contributions to environmental investigation. See more about Top of Europe See more of my Jungfrau-panos
