For years, I had always thought Advent was a countdown to celebrating Christmas. Not so, apparently. Christmas is a time to remember the birth of Christ, but Advent is a time to anticipate His return. So, at this time of year, we find ourselves in the "in-between" times: celebrating the fact of Christmas and looking forward to the hope of Christ's return.

I chose this image as my Best of 2008 not for technical reasons, or because it's a cozy image of my wife and myself (and Maggie the cat!), but because this is the best time of the year, when the whole world celebrates Christmas. We might not all celebrate for the same reason, or fully understand the profound miracle that it represents, but it is still a time where the birth of God as a child in a lowly stable takes center stage in our lives.

Now, let's keep that at the center for the REST of the year!
