Scotts Bluff National Monument was established to commemorate the Oregon Trail that was used during the great westward expansion of the United States during the mid 1800s. The bluffs rise 800 feet above the Nebraska Plains and served as a landmark for the wagon trains. Reaching the bluffs meant they were halfway through their westward journey.

This panorama was taken from the east end of the bluffs overlooking the Cities of Scottsbluff and Gering. If you look carefully to the east, another Oregon Trail landmark, Chimney Rock, can be seen faintly.
