In 2010 my hometown, Essen, was "The Capital of Culture in Europe 2010".

During the whole year several small and big events happened. One was the "Schachtzeichen" ("Minesigns"). For more than a week in May, 2010, the sites of old coal mines (we have a lot of them) were marked with big yellow balloons flying as high as 80 meters. These balloons also flew during some of the nights.

In this panorama you can see the "Schachtzeichen" at night at Zeche Zollverein, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. It was a very special night when I took this pano. Warm, nearly no wind and a rising full moon together with the illuminated ballons in the air created a "spriritual" scene.
