Buttermilk is generally known as the family and ski lesson mountain of the four ski areas in Aspen due to its abundance of gentle terrain. The sundeck at the Cliffhouse restaurant is a popular spot for rest, lunch, and scenic photography due to it's sunny location and mountain views (we're about 45 minutes ahead of the lunch crowd). The ski mountain directly across from the deck (south) is Highlands ski area. The ridge to the left of the lower slopes of Highlands is Aspen Mountain - you can see a a narrow band of ski runs on the very top of the ridge. The most sought after views are to the right of Highlands. The glacier carved valley floor is the Maroon Creek Valley and the high peak at the end of the valley is the 14,000 foot Pyramid Peak. The well-known Maroon Bells are just out of view, to the right of Pyramid.
