Mercato Centrale di San Lorenzo.
The main covered market in the historical center of the city is located on a wide area a few hundred meters from the Basilica di San Lorenzo and the Medicis Chapels.
This big building dating between 1870 and 1874 is the masterpiece of architect G. Mengoni, who brilliantly exploited the 19th Century technologies of iron architecture on a rectangular plan with internal pedestrian streets.
The new market represents one of the most relevant late urban transformations accomplished in the ancient heart of Florence.
The elegant, light original structures of the walls mostly in iron and glass, with wide wooden blinds designed to control lighting and temperature, are now partially hidden by a heavy recent iron frame designed to sustain an internal elevated floor.
The market is still the heart of a very lively area of the city, intensively frequented not only by tourists but also by Florentines and newcomers.
