The town of Waltham Abbey is situated on the Greenwich Meridian - where East meets West. The Meridian Gateway by Jon Mills was installed in 1995 to mark the position of the 0 degrees line. It also provides entry to the Rose Garden from the monastic precinct of the Augustinian Abbey. The gates are in the form of the crescent moon and sextant, which fit nicely together when closed. Spring, alas, is late this year so shrubs and trees are showing few signs of new growth appearing.
