In 1985 the Schengen Agreement on the abolition of checks at the borders within Europe was signed, but it took another ten years until the practical effects were beginning to be evident. This frontier-crossing point near the Bridge of Europe - linking the cities of Kehl in Germany and Strasbourg in France - used to be quite busy, today the customs buildings and the offices of the frontier police are deserted, and cars simply drive through. It looks a bit eerie, but I like it better that way.
