This spring’s main theme is “Atmosphere” - with a capital A. Having a strong passion - actually almost an umbilical cord - for the “Enrico Toti” submarine, it was natural for me to think about the atmosphere under immersion, both in a physical way and in the sense of comradeship among the crew. Here we are in the periscope room, the heart of the submarine, with the red night light turned on… It impressed me to imagine a crew formed by four officers and twenty-two men consisting of petty officers, deputy chiefs and commons for a total of twenty-six men, when on the other side there were bunks for just half of the submariners. This can be explained by the four-hour work shifts: when you rest you may lay in your bed, but if you’re on duty you won’t be needing it! Making the most of space in a situation where every millimetre is important… wow!

Wow!
