On the March Equinox where does the Sun rise and set? I went to Deer Lake State Park, looking from the beach end of the dune crossover ramp, which is about the only local site with views of the horizon to east and west. Sunrise and sunset were at about 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. local daylight savings time (CDT or 6:00 and 18:00 naturally in 24-hour time). On an equinox, day and night are equal. So here they are together, opposite times in the same place, with sunrise in the east and sunset in the west. Land and sea. Day and night. Wet and dry. The opposites are balanced but far from equal. I confess it was actually March 20, the day before the equinox. It was the only day with good weather and on March 21, the equinox day, I was away at a meditation retreat. The park gate opens from the road at 8:00 and closes at sunset, so I had to walk a mile up the beach each morning and night. Before dawn, the waves were full of phosphorescent fish, crashing with glowing surf. I was alone in the magic. Around sunset people played on the sand. What does food have to do with it? Just one green apple blessed by sunlight, eaten after dark.
