Historical and Cultural Heritage of Porto Alegre, the Central Market was inaugurated in 1869 to house the trade supply of the city. Listed as a cultural patrimony, it became an icon of the shopping capital of the state.

The market has today, 110 establishments, with the following activities: Butchers, fishmongers and seafood restaurants (macrobiotic, Japanese cuisine, Portuguese cuisine, assorted meats and a buffet, snack bars, pastries, bakeries, fruit (both local and imported), vegetables, animal feed, seeds, seedlings, regional crafts, bomboniere, lottery, magazines and newspaper stands, flora and articles for Ubuntu, ornamental fish and aquarium products, coffee shop, barber shop, bookstore.

The market offers various products, such as:

Regional Products - yerba mate, teas, spices, to gourds mate, natural loofah (mop), beef jerky, honey.

Natural Products - oats, flour and whole grains, brown sugar, soy, multimixture, tofu, breads, pastries, granola.

Spice - domestic and imported dried fruits, sweet fruits, milk, cheeses, pates, butter, ham, olives, cod, smoked fish, wines, cachaça, confectionary products and ice cream, chocolate.

Exclusivity - the bulk sale of cereals, flour, sliced ham at the time, roasted and ground coffee of various origins, fruit salad, the freshest fish in town, seeds and herbs varied.

Culture - Besides the full range of products, the Public Market is also characterized by being a place where cultural activities such as concerts, art exhibitions, parades, evenings, etc.
