In music, scale refers to a graduated series of musical tones ascending or descending in order of pitch according to a specified scheme, or tuning, of their intervals. Different tuning schemes or temperaments use subtle differences in specific frequency ratios of the intervals between fifths, fourths, and thirds resulting in how the music sounds. Of the myriad of different tunings that have evolved, the major categories are Pythagorean, just, meantone, well temperament, and equal temperament. Most notable are well temperament which was used by Bach and equal temperament which is the present-day tuning.

In the panorama are examples of a modern grand piano and a reproduction of an 18th century French double-manual harpsichord by Zuckermann. Both are tuned using equal temperament.
