The Beguinage is situated between Saint Martin's Church and Our Lady's Church. The frugal inner court yard is decorated with a statue of Johanna of Constantinople, who is said to have founded the Beguinage in 1241. There are about forty little houses in baroque style in this Beguinage (17th century). Even Saint Mathieu's chapel, which dates from 1464, was given a baroque touch. Unique, or at least very rare, the beguinage is still inhabitated by a beguine Marcella Pattyn, born august 18 in 1920, now blind and one must be very lucky to see her on the way to and from the chapel. The white wall is devided by a brons statue (2000) made after Marcella in honor to all the beguines.
