The Pawtucket Canal was built in the 1790's and was the largest canal system in America at the time, thus earning the nickname "Venice of America" for the city of Lowell, MA. In the 1820's, the canal was greatly enlarged to serve as the main water source for Lowell's new power canal. This is a view of the Lower Locks, the last of the three locks and dam complexes.
