For several years, it's been a tradition among a group of paddlers to head out onto the lake and watch the rising moon. The June 2005 full moon appearing on the Solstice made this evening an especially nice one.

These folks are putting in at the Neck Road Access Area on Mountain Island Lake. This lake, on the Catawba River, is the primary source of drinking water for the city of Charlotte, NC. It is under a considerable amount of development pressure. Buffers and other water quality rules may not be enough to preserve this resource.

Mountain Island is one of 11 resevoirs operated on the Catawba by Duke Power.
