Originally built at the end of the 19th century, the San Francisco Sutro Baths consisted of seven pools whose water circulation was serviced by waves from the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the pools, the baths consisted of an amphitheater, seating up to 3,700 people, and three restaurants. The baths were condemend in the 1960s. Today all that remains is the foundations of some of the buildings and miscellaneous plumbing. The ruins became a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1973.
The Sutro ruins are situated on the Pacific Coast and offer grand views of the Pacific Ocean and the Seal Rocks. Just to the south of the baths perched above the Pacific Ocean on a cliff is the aptly named Cliff House. The Cliff House was originally constructed in 1896 and has been rebuilt four times. The latest reconstruction was completed in 2004.
