Paterson New Jersey's 77 foot tall Great Falls of the Passaic River are the second highest (after Niagara Falls) waterfall on the east coast of the United States. It was here in 1791 that Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton helped form a private, state chartered corporation, the "Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures" (S.U.M.). The S.U.M. planned to harness power of the Great Falls to supply mills with water power for manufacturing purposes.

Paterson became one of the first industrial centers in the United States, combining water power, industrial development, and urban planning.

In 1910 the S.U.M. convinced mill owners to switch to electric power. Thomas Edison's Electric Company built one of the world's first hydroelectric plants here. It is still operational today.
