A plant community was covered by dunes from the Atlantic Ocean and formed that bed of (possibly very young) lignite. Since the bed is impervious to water many small fresh water sources spring up from it and pour directly into the ocean.

Albeit the place is named "Pin Sec" (the dry pine) there is a good supply of fresh groundwater for the currently living forest behind the dunes due to this fossil plant community.

Behind the scene : how this panorama was made

I must admit that the pano is a very wide interpretation of the theme, but I had little chance between almost empty camp grounds and sleepy Medoc villages. There is a beautiful pine forest behind the dunes, but that would have been a boring forest only pano.

My attention was drawn to that black veins at the foot of the dunes where water emerged and the sand was partly black. When I found out that this was a kind of coal I decided for a sunset pano. I hope the beauty of the scene excuses the apparent distance to the original theme.
