Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian abbey in England, built by French monks in 1128.

For the next four hundred years the Abbey was home to community of 2,000 monks until its dissolution by Henry VIII in 1536, as part of the dissolution of the monasteries. As the Abbey lay in ruins, stones were taken to build nearby houses.

The remains of Waverley Abbey are now maintained by English Heritage.
