After 30 months of absence I returned to Lisbon as a tourist, having lived there for more than 3 years already. I had many "elevated" ideas and panoramas shot, but finally I chose the view from the Public Elevator Santa Justa as my entry for this event. The Santa Justa Lift was designed by Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, an engineer born in Portugal. Construction began in 1900 and was finished in 1902. Originally powered by steam, it was converted to electrical operation in 1907. The iron lift is 45 meters high. It has a terrace on top that offers views of Lisbon Castle, the Graça Convent , the Rossio Square and the Baixa neighborhood. The lift has become a tourist attraction in Lisbon although it was intended as a public means of transport to get people from the Baixa (low city) to the Carmo square in Bairro Alto (high city) .
