Nowy Sacz is located in the flat Sadecka valley bottom, between the Dunajec and Kamienica Nawojowska Rivers, on diverse altitude, ranging from 272 m above sea level (Wielopole) to 387 m (Majdan Hill).

The oldest part of the city lies on flat beds raising between the two rivers, having natural defensive qualities, which decided on the placement of the town by King Waclaw II in such a place. The location in the Sadecka Valley causes a particular isolation of Nowy Sacz from other centers of settlement, but an important communication route running through it toward the south of Europe, meant that the city was open to the favorable conditions for development and trade in the Middle Ages - mainly from Hungary.

Nowy Sacz is situated at the foot of the mountain massifs of Beskid Sadecki, Beskid Niski and Beskid Wyspowy, in close proximity to Roznowskie Lake, which adds to the tourist values of the town.
