I learned to swim some 50 years ago on this very spot, the old public swimming pool in Sassenheim. The pool was divided in a men's section on the right and a women's section on the left. The cabins and showers (also decently sectioned) were green wooden buildings and at the far end of the pool there was a green wooden fence to separate the pool from the canal leading to open water. The pool was nothing like we expect from a modern swimming pool today. It was (and is) in open connection with the water of the Kagerplassen, no chloric decontamination, no forced refreshing, and early in the year it was cold, as low as 14°C (57°F). But it certainly had no negative effects on me or my generation.Location
