Virginia is full of small family cemeteries along country roads and highways, situated behind convenience stores and surrounded by asphalt in a big-box store parking lots. Not far into the Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve is the Dawson Family Cemetery. I’ve always been fascinated by this large tree that seems to be joined to the large well-preserved headstone of William Dawson (1802-1853).

The Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve is a nature preserve with a few old mountain homestead sites and nature trails. It was also the site of a civil war skirmish near Chapman’s Mill in Thoroughfare Gap.
