The Big Winch is one of many "Big Things" to be found around Australia.

The Big Winch is a large-scale model of a machine used by miners to bring buckets of diggings from the opal mines to the surface. It is situated on a lookout over the outback opal-mining town of Coober Pedy in South Australia.

Coober Pedy is called the "opal capital of the world" because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there, supplying most of the world's gem-quality opal. The town is renowned for its underground buildings, called "dugouts", which are built due to the scorching daytime heat.
