The Kingston Bridge opened in 1969 and the ten-lanes (five in each direction) have made it Europe's busiest road bridge, with 180,000 vehicles a day using it. The bridge links the eastern M8 motorway with the western M8 motorway and lies within the city centre of Glasgow, where it provides a crossing at the height of 60 feet over The River Clyde. In the year 2000 repairs costing 31 million pounds were completed, during which the centre section was raised 10 millimeters and moved 190 millimeters to the south so that new support piling could be inserted.
The bridge stretches back inland on both sides because the height and geometry dictates it has to reach far back before it hits ground. This panorama has been photographed under the southern end of the bridge where the space below has been steralised by the sheer volume of this enormous concrete structure. Under the bridge you do nothing in this vast cathedral like space where there is the constant loud noise of the invisible (from here) traffic passing overhead. The days that I dont drive across this bridge are probably the days that I dont have to go to work.
