One of the very few suspended bridges in Italy, the "Indiano" Viaduct was built in the mid 80s, thus being the most recent among Florence's nine bridges on the Arno river. Its name comes from the Indian Maharaja Rajaram Cutraputti, who died in 1780 in Florence on his way back to India after having travelled around Europe. As a special regard for the high rank of the dead, the Bishop and the Municipality of the city exceptionally allowed his body to be burned accordingly to the Hindi ritual. The ashes had then to be thrown in the waters at the confluence of two rivers, namely the Arno and one small tributary of its - poorly visible in the pano -, in the same place where the contemporary bridge now crosses the river.
