Light is the energy that we take for granted, either from the sun or at a flick of a switch. To light our nights a vast amount of energy is used to provide us with this convenience, consuming the resources of our planet and polluting it.Lighting the darkness drives away irrational fears formed in childhood and makes us feel safe and in control of our environment. Light is a symbol of our civilisation but we may have to switch on a little less and learn to live with the shadows.
Here at Hastings on the south coast of England, at the end of a clear Autumn day, the amusement arcades and other attractions blaze with artificial brilliance drawing visitors and other pleasure seekers. The town is now a large urban sprawl with many social problems and a legacy of government neglect, but The Old Town still retains its charm and the fish n chips are some of the best in England.
