The Control Center for the California ISO (Independent System Operator) is the high-tech electricity traffic controller for 75 percent of the state, directing some 200 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to utilities that serve an estimated 30 million Californians. A combination video/mosaic display system serves as the backdrop to the Control Center and allows ISO operators to assimilate large volumes of information in one glance.

Within this 15,000 square foot Control Center is the window to California’s electrical backbone— a giant mosaic mapboard that gives an instant overview of where electrons are flowing throughout the state. A total of 230,076 square tiles, each 24-millimeters in size, are snapped into place by hand to form the imposing mapboard. Dynamic indicators show what circuits are closed or open, and the status of key power plants and substations. This enables the ISO to monitor the security and transmission reliability of California’s high-voltage lines, as well as those extending into neighboring states and portions of British Columbia and Mexico.
