In the 1790's two canals were built in South East Wales linking over 200 miles of waterway enabling canal boats to convey coal, iron and limestone to the busy port of Newport and to other towns in South Wales and the Midlands.

Today the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal is considered by many to be Britain's most picturesque canal, and, for much of it's length, lies with the Brecon Beacons National Park.
