There is bright blue sky, a bright red sign, and even a color in the name of the city.

But the real story of this panorama is how on Feb. 1, 1960 four very courageous young men took a stand for equality by taking a seat. At that time the lunch counter of the F.W. Woolworth store in Greensboro NC, like many other similar places across the nation, served only people whose skin color was white.

What those four young men did that day and in the days to follow proved to be an historically significant step on a long journey for USA society. A journey that continues today with steps like that taken at the most recent Democratic Party convention.

The story of how four young college students started a nationwide non-violent sit-in movement that changed the history of a nation can be found in many places in much better prose than I could hope to write. This link might be a good place to start to find some of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greensboro_sit-ins .

The F.W. Woolworth building is now vacant, but will someday be the home of the International Civil Rights Museum, http://www.sitinmovement.org/ .
