Steam locomotives were first developed at the end of the 18th century and dominated railway transportation until the middle of the 20th century. From the early 1900s they were gradually superseded by diesel and electric locomotives.

Electric locomotives series 362 could operate on a mountain railway line with very hilly terrain. These locomotives were deployed on the line in Slovenia between 1960 and 1964 and operated until the last drive in Slovenia in year 2009.
