Guy West Bridge

It was a lovely spring (1) day and I decided to take advantage of the weather and a day off of work to do the shoot for the Borders WWP event.

My chosen subject for the event was the Guy West Bridge (2). This pedestrian bridge crosses the American River(3) between the California State University, Sacramento (4) campus and a residential area of Sacramento with a large number of apartments used by students. I was not alone in enjoying the day. Families were wandering the American River Parkway and bikers were cycling along the American River Bike Trail which is on the top of the levee (5) along this section of the river.

(1) Spring, a border between Winter and Summer.
Sacramento has a Mediterranean climate and rather short Spring and Fall seasons. Because of this shortness they form a quite distinct border between Summer and Winter.

(3) river, a border between the two sides of the river.
Sacramento has the nick name of "The River City". This justly deserved name is because of the American and Sacramento rivers. These two rivers meet just outside of downtown and have a long history of causing floods. The rivers are the sole drainage for the northern and central portions of the Sierra Nevada mountains. There are many bridges across these rivers in the Sacramento area. Without these bridges the rivers would be formidable borders.

(4) university, a border between childhood and adulthood.

(5) levee, a border between the water in a river and the surrounding countryside.
The city of Sacramento has in the last year been compared to New Orleans. Like New Orleans, Sacramento is surrounded by levees. These levees, some of which are substandard, are the only thing between the high water of the river during spring melt and large scale flooding. This spring in particular has been one of high tensions with wave after wave of storms. It's not over yet. Will we make it to Summer without a major levee break and the resulting flood?
