Medieval Border Entrance

The Tower of Calahorra is one of the many historic attractions the city of Elche has to offer. Its structure among the modern city reminds us of the ancient and now disappeared borders that once surrounded and protected the city.

The tower of Calahorra dates back to the beginning of the 12th century. The tower is of Arab origin and its purpose was to defend the city’s most important entrance which connected the city of Elche with Alicante. The tower was an important part of the wall which bordered the city, the wall started at the castle (View wwp Border Antonio V. Garcia-Serrano) and surrounded the city’s old limits.

The original height of the tower was 20 meters but an earthquake in 1829 reduced its height, it still maintains original features such as its neoarab windows. In 1492 a building was built adjoining the tower which was used to weigh maize before taking it to the mills.

Well this is my first pano, I struggled a little bit taking the photographs as I wasn't happy with the first result, so I had another go. I shot in raw and developed with different characteristics for the light and for the sky. Had to pass the reduce noise filter in photoshop and some curves and color balance. After seeing the end result I think it might have been better if I had stood a bit further back so that I could capture the tower as a whole.

I am currently away from university as Im doing my placement year at Oned Graphics in Spain.
