In this area a nuclear power plant was to be built in the 1970s. Luckily this was canceled due to protests. Apparently the administration of the nearby village Wyhl decided to build a fitness trail instead, most likely during the fitness boom in the 1980s.
Later on jogging became popular and maintaining fitness trails turned out to be expensive. Like this one, many trails where abandoned. Now everything is overgrown with a 30-year-old forest, an alluvial forest which might get flooded sometimes—there are some old meanders of the Rhine nearby as can be clearly seen in Google Earth. An embankment protects the farmland to the east. The whole area is a nature reserve now.
I found this spot while searching the location for the spring equinox WWP event "Limits".
