The small village of Dennach near the northern end of the Black Forest was mentioned first in 1368 as "Tenech" which means "Stelle mit Tannen" ("location with fir trees"). Apparently there was some kind of road with some houses built along it. Then starting from the backyards of these houses the forest was cleared successively resulting in those large meadows. This structure is still visible: the old part is a linear village.

Agriculture never played a major role there, since the climate is too harsh. The villagers either lived from the forest grazing pigs, cutting wood, burning coal, collecting berries etc. or they went working down in the valley.

I already featured the forest nearby in the Borders WWP event.
