Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School - Automotive Shop - a morning class learns how to repair our cars and trucks

Since humans first began transporting people and things there has been a need to repair broken equipment. The automotive, construction and agricultural industries require a continuous supply of trained technicians to keep our cars, trucks, tractors and recreational vehicles in safe working condition. Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School gives students the basic skills needed to to get jobs in the automotive and transportation industries.

The movie opens showing two students working on a BMW up on the hoist. They are inspecting for an oil leak, and repairing a loose bumper bracket. Panning right we see a student asking Mr. Levasseur the Auto Mechanics teacher a question regarding todays lesson on four cycle engine technology. Next we see two students performing a tire rotation on a black SUV. The students washing the Chrysler Intrepid are being supervised by Mr Zarzosa the Auto Body teacher and are learning how to properly detail a car (complete wash, dry and interior vacuum). The student in the middle of the shop with an engine on a stand, is practicing how to remove a water pump. The photos for this panorama were taken during a regular morning automotive class.

During their time at Sir Guy Carleton, students will mature into young men and women ready for the working world. Our specialized facility is designed to allow students to develop their talents in subjects like welding, small engines, machine shop, auto mechanics, auto body, food preparation, baking, child care, first aid, hair dressing, woodwork and landscaping.

Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School:

The path to a university degree is not for everyone. According to Statistics Canada, less than 12 percent of Canada’s population acquires a university degree. Another 11 percent receives a college certificate or diploma. That means that more that 3 out of 4 Canadians do not further their formal education beyond high school. Most are hard working, productive individuals who are the foundation of our society. They keep us fed, transported, housed and entertained. It is this 75% of the population that Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School proudly serves.

How we do it:

As an adaptive school, students entering Sir Guy are academically delayed a minimum of two to three years. Our challenge is to prepare them for the working world with employable skills and work habits. The programs at Sir Guy Carleton are designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of learners; to that end, we offer both preparatory (non-credit) and credit based programs. Students entering high school who are four or more years behind in their literacy and numeracy skills will be recommended for the preparatory program. Students with skills closer to grade level will usually enter the credit path. Students starting out in the preparatory program may enter the credit based stream in later years should their subject specific skills approach grade level. more: 

Our objective is to correctly set the bar at a challenging but achievable level for students so they build confidence by experiencing real success. We expect students to work hard at their education---there is no free ride here. Regular attendance and a positive work habits developed here, will serve them for a lifetime.

Potential Employers Note: Documented skills acquired;

In each of the technology areas of study, the student’s specific and employability skills are evaluated and recorded each year. Upon graduation, each student is presented with a certificate of the major Technology areas in which they have studied, clearly indicating the skill level that he or she has achieved. These certificates are contained within a bound presentation portfolio.

The Skills Portfolio also includes the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Ontario Secondary School Certificate, a copy of the student transcript, certificates of merit, Work Experience evaluations and a resume. Additional items such as special training certificates and letters of recommendation are included in the portfolio.

In other schools students are set on a path toward post-secondary education. At Sir Guy Carleton, students are prepared for life! Our goal is to make this journey the happiest and most successful one possible.
