THE JOURNEY OF A CHILD

The mouth is ready. Ready for eating, or rather for engulfing its food. Coal. If during my adolescence my favorite means of carriage was the flight, when I was a child travel was TRAIN. Diesel and electric engines were ousting steam ones, but you had yet some opportunites to see a few of them on some minor sections. The walking near a “coffee-pot” ready to leave was moving and rapturing, specially on departure. (How can we forget the song with the phrase“…e sul binario stava la locomotiva, la macchina pulsante sembrava fosse cosa viva…” My mother had another opinion, particularly when she drew me in from the window at the entrance of the tunnel. At the end you had the smell of the train on you, the taste of coal on you, the fragrance of journey on you. That’s the fragrance coming to my nose when monting on the engine in the railway pavillon of Museum of Science and Tecnology in Milan: I wish to thank them for the recurring avaiability, both for permission and the awakening emotions. Special thanks to my patient wife for her translations, specially for this one (also if she refused to translate the phrase of the song: I'LL TRY TO TRANSLATE IT: “…and the locomotive was on the platform, the throbing machine was looking like a living thing…” – I TRIED TO TRANSLATE. I HOPE THAT NOW THE MEANING IS MORE CLEAR ).
