Schooling for Sustenance

A small classroom with only one broken wood window, a shabby kitchen shared by pupils and their teacher, and a narrow dark bedroom for the teacher… All these three rooms won’t exceed 30 square meters in total area. This mud house located in the big mountains is a primary school for children living in the remote mountains in Dongshan Township of Yongsheng County in Yunnan province, China.

There’re only 2 grade classes in this school sharing the only classroom. 8 pupils of grade one faces the blackboard at the back while 6 students of grade three faces the front one. Small pits caused by raindrops from roof leaks could be seen on the mud floor…

The only teacher in the school is giving classes to 2 groups of children at same time. There’s no electricity in the school, and the dim light is from that broken wood window and the opening door.

This is a scene of real sustenance of a group of children living in the poor remote mountains in China, which shows some understanding of sustenance of local residents: When the family could gain enough food from their farm work, they hope the livelihood of children could be changed through receiving school education.

It is true that some children could walk out of their remote hometown in the future to work in a comparatively developed area for better income than farming at home. While schooling doesn’t mean a guarantee of better sustenance, some parents would choose not to continue sending their children to school but keeping them at home as helper, so they could help with home revenues earlier.

Government sent the teacher to this little school and pays him to provide stable formal education to pupils in the village. A charity organization named World Vision is sponsoring children here to help them finish their primary school.
