This is one of the older churchs in Rio. It is sitting on 61m high, on top of a little hill in front of Flamengo Beach. It's construction begun in 1671. On that year, a portuguese man, named Antonio de Caminha, made a small "capela" on top of a hill in honor of "Our Saint Gloria" (Nossa Senhora da Gloria). In 1699, the little church got a big donation in cash for a construction of the church we know today. The project was designed by Tenet Coronel Jose Cardoso Ramalho. Nobody knows who did the beautiful altars or the splendid internal decoration. The style is based on the church of Sao Pedro dos Clerigos, in the city of Porto , in Portugual, Europe. Every year in August the Outeiro da Gloria is prepared for a party that has been happening during the last 260 years. In the 19th century this was considered the biggest city's party. The construction has finished in 1739 and then the Bisp Frei Antonio de Guadalupe created the Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Gloria. The church really got famous in 1808 when the portuguese court family arrived in Brazil. In 1819 the princess maria da Gloria came to Brazil with her grand father Don Joao VI for the consagration cerimony. Since then, all the members of the family Braganca, born in Brazil are consagrated in that church. The hill whre the church is sitting is named "Morro do Leripe" or "Urucumirim" and it was in front of the sea with a fort full of French army , that was dominated by the Portugueses in january, 20th, 1567 by Estacio de Sa, the man who created the city of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, nowadays worldwide know as Rio de Janeiro. This man got killed here when conquered the church back to the Portugueses. So this is a historical place in Rio de Janeiro and very important to our history.
