This pano was shot from, probably, the highest point in Elche and shows a 360º elevated view of the city from the Basilica tower.

The Santa Maria Basilica (WWP1204) has the highest tower in Elche. This has an elevation of about 40m and is marked with a geodesic vertex at the top. The views of Elche and surroundings from the top of the tower are therefore splendid and the tower itself can be considered as a reference point of the city as it can also be seen from various different points around the city (see WWP604, WWP1204, WWP905, WWP306).

This emblematic tower contributed to the consideration of Elche as a city. In 1871, King Amadeo I of Saboya, visited the village of Elche and after seeing the marvellous views from the tower He mentioned that Elche was a great city. A few days later the local authorities asked the King for this consideration in formal which of course He granted.

Special thanks to the Basilica sacristan, Manuel Fernandez, for his cooperation towards shooting this pano.

n.b. This view actually compliments that of WWP604 and it has finally fulfilled an entry into my most wanted pano-list (although not completed: I should, sometime, go for the gigapixel version!).
