Do you know that Denmark, which is one of the smallest countries in Europe, has a coastline the same length as India and Brazil.

The Danish coastline is, with its variety and diversity, unique in Europe.

Wide white sand beaches in the west, white limestone cliffs on Møn, beach meadows with a large diversity of birds and flora or rugged granite cliffs on Bornholm. You can find any type of coast in Denmark. 80% of the Danish population lives today in the coastal areas, and almost all important cities are harbour cities.

A trip along the coast of Denmark is also a trip in time where you can experience the Danish History. Fossils at the cliffs - Vikings - Middle age Castles - Windmills representing today’s Danish world, leading Wind Power technology.

The panorama is from Kalø at the south coast of Djursland. You stand on a small fortification called Grevens Skanse - The Count's fortification, and in front of you is a small island with the ruins of a mediveal castle - Kalø Castle. The origin of the fortification is unknown, Maybe it was a prominent post for the castle.

Kalø Castle was built 1313 by King Erik Menved and is not just Danish History but is also part of the Swedish history as one of the most well known Swedish kings Gustav Vasa, was kept as a prisoner at the castle in 1518-1519.

The Beach meadow in front of you has a diversity of resting birds you can experience from the mediveal stone road, the oldest road in Denmark, built in the 14th century on the embankment leading to the island.

The castle was pulled down by Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve in 1662 and the material was used to build his private palace in Copenhagen, today called the Charlottenborg Palace.

You can see the Studstrup Power Station to the right of the island and to the left you can faintly see one of the many wind turbines.
