The St. Croix River Valley has sediments and rock formations dating back a billion years. The valley itself was carved 10,000 years ago by melting glaciers from Lake Superior, 100 miles to the north. The river was a major trade route for hundreds of years to Native-Americans and to French, English, and American fur traders.

Today the St. Croix River is designated a National Scenic Riverway and is the only riverway in North America protected for its entire length. The St. Croix River is the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota, and connects 6 different state parks. The river valley is home to a diverse wildlife population, including many fish, black bears, timber wolves, and the four eagles you see circling overhead.
