This was taken at the east end of the Columbia River Gorge, where the river cuts through the Cascade mountain range. The viewpoint is on I-84, just west of Hood River. One can hike to the top of the point where the view is probably even more spectacular, but this was taken from a ledge just a short scramble above the parking lot and normal viewing area.

The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular area full of waterfalls, hiking trails, museums, and many other points of interest. It bridges the very green west sides of Oregon and Washington, with the dry eastern sides. One of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Gorge is Multnomah Falls, the topic of my March 2009 "Diversity" entry. Several times in the gorge's history, cataclysmic floods have swept through it when large inland lakes formed by ice dams drained upon the dam's failing.
